Abstract

The Asia & Pacific Seed Association (APSA) – WorldVeg Vegetable Breeding Consortium was established in 2017 to enable greater impact of the Center’s vegetable breeding programs. The consortium had 40 members in 2022 while WorldVeg had active collaborations with 51 seed companies in Asia. Annually we conduct a survey among past and current members to assess their use of WorldVeg breeding lines of tomato, pepper, bitter gourd, and pumpkin. This year, 40 companies provided data while we have data for 52 companies at some point in time. The key findings are as follows: 1. In 2022, the WorldVeg genetic resources unit processed 2,326 seed requests from consortium members. WorldVeg has shipped 10,456 seed samples to consortium members since 2017. 2. Consortium members had at least 152 vegetable varieties on the market in 2022 that were wholly or partially based on WorldVeg germplasm. The number of varieties based on WorldVeg germplasm has steadily increased since 2017. 3. Seed sales of WorldVeg-related varieties in Asia were estimated to be 40.0 tons in 2022. This is a substantial increase from 14.5 tons in 2018 and 24.7 tons in 2020. The estimate is based on quantities reported by seed companies and may underestimate the true amount. 4. This quantity of seed is enough to potentially plant 245,000 ha under WorldVeg-related varieties and benefit 680,000 farm households in Asia (up from 524,000 in 2021).
