Abstract
Manila and its surrounding metropolitan districts are among the most densely populated areas in the world. Residents of Metro Manila rely on provinces up to 500 km away for their vegetables. Vegetables are relatively expensive in Manila and consumption is below recommended levels for good health. The government of the Philippines recognizes urban agriculture as a means to increase food security. The efficient supply of good quality vegetable seedlings is important to realizing the potential of urban agriculture and overcome challenges in the use of vegetable seed. The objective of this study is to develop a thorough understanding of the current state of seedling systems in and around Metro Manila.
