Summary
It has been shown that leaf curl disease of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is caused by virus. The disease was transmitted by means of wedge-grafting as well as by the white flies, Bemisia tabaci Gen., to the chillies and a number of other hosts, producing typical leaf curl symptoms. The causal virus was identified as tobacco leaf curl virus (Ruga tabaci H.) Puri Red and Puri Orange varieties of chilli were found to be resistant. The authors are thankful to Dr. R. S. Vasudeva and Dr. B. L. Chona, Head of the Division of Mycology and Plant Pathology, I.A.R.I., New Delhi, for giving facilities to carry out the investigations and for their interest in the work. [AS]
