Summary
Double cropping of wheat and soybean is an important production system in MIssouri. A short growing season after the wheat harvest and marginal soil moisture for soybean establishment are factors that limit the productivity of the system. Successul production of double crop wheat-soybeasn begins with proper wheat management. Fertilizer for both crops should be uniform and adequate to suppress weed growth. Early harvest of wheat followed by drying of the grain is frequently an economical practice in parts of the state with season-length limitations. In Missouri, soybean yields decreased 200 to 335 kg/ha for each week`s delay in planting. Most soybean failures in the system result from poor stand establishment. Unless moisture is adequate for prompt emergence of soybeans at the time of the wheat harvest, a delay in planting is advised. Should rainfall come with less than 95 days remainging in the growing season, double cropping should be abandoned for that year. following this recommendation eliminates the major source of failure in double cropping before most variable costs associated with soybeans have been incurred. No-till is an important management practice in double cropping. Its use saves time between crops and reduces soil water loss. [AS]
