Summary
The distribution and development of soybean nodules which were collected from 616 locations in the Kao-Ping area were evaluated during a five-year survey. Results were summarized as follows: (1) While soybeans were at vegetative stage to flowering stage, the average no. of nodules per plant was 2.48 and only 32.8% of them were detected as effective ones. (2) More than 70% of the nodules were gathered together in the 0-10 cm of soil depth of root system. Moreover, the aeration capacity and soil texture also retarded root growth and nodular distribution. (3) Farmers always supply too much nitrogen fertilizer (20-50 kg N/ha) which reuslts in dark green soybean leaves. In addition, this heavy nitrogen application rate statistically decreased nodule development and effectiveness. [AS]
