Summary
Breeding research to overcome the problem of weather damage to mungbean (Vigna radiata) seed is described. Weather damage, expressed as discoloration, cracking, reduced vigor, increased pathogen infection, and ultimately seed death, is caused by cyclic wetting and drying. Breeding activities aim to reduce water uptake by seeds through increased hard-seedness, pod wall resistance to water absorption, and avoidance of wet weather through modification of phenology. Progress towards breeding objectives is documented. [AS]
