Summary
A list is given of 17 species of predatory phytoseiids collected on various plants in Nigeria, with notes on the taxonomy of and mites species associated (as commensals or as prey) with each species. One of these predators, Amblyseius sundi Pritchard & Baker, is redescribed from the adult female and was found on a variety of plants including sweet potato, green pepper (Capsicum annuum) and banana; and the previously unknown male is described of Typhlodromips rykei (Pritchard & Baker) on sweet potato, groundnuts and other plants. Among the 6 species described as new, those of economic interest (which are all described from the adult female) were A. aegyptiacus sp.n. attributed to Denmark & Matthysse on Luffa aegyptiaca, A. solus sp.n. attributed to Denmark & Matthysse on Phaseolus vulgaris and other plants, Euseius saltus sp.n. attributed to Denmark & Matthysse on yam, E. distinctus sp.n. attributed to Denmark & Matthysse on Ficus sp., banana and other plants, and Paraseiulus parva sp.n. attributed to Denmark & Matthysse on Terminalia catappa. Other species of economic interest that were observed were Trochoseius gongylus (Pritchard & Baker) on Telfairia occidentalis, and Pennaseius amba (Pritchard & Baker) on sweet potato and other plants.
