Summary
Seed quality of peanut, mungbean, and soybean intercropped with sugarcane studied. The experiment was conducted at the Central Experiment Station, U.P. at Los Banos, College, Laguna. Peanut, mungbean, and soybean were intercropped with sugarcane in two spatial arrangements. These were single row with 1.5 m interval furrow spacing and double row with 2.6 m interval furrow spacing. Intercropping generally produced seeds with low germinability and poor seedling vigor. Shading imposed by the maincrop (sugarcane) resulted into a microclimate characterized by high relative humidity. This contributed much to the deterioration of seed quality. Under intercropped condition, however, the quality of seeds harvested at the center row plants in double row spacing was not affected. These indicate that legume seeds produced under sugarcane intercropping should not be used as planting materials primarily due to their low germinability. [AS]
