Summary:
The primary metabolism of 15N-labeled nitrate, asparagine and allantoin fed through cut stems of soybean shoots at the grain-filling stage was investigated. The results suggested that in intact plants at the reproductive stage a large fraction of the nitrate N absorbed from the leaves was distributed to the leaves, while the fixed-N was distributed to the pods. It is concluded from the experimental results that at the grain-filling stage nitrate-N is primarily transferred to and metabolized in the leaves and asparagine-N is retained in the stem and petioles with little transformation and translocated to the grains, while allantoin-N is transferred to and metabolized in both leaves and pods.
