Summary
CO On 5, a variety of aggregatum onion is a high yielding variety developed by mass pedigree method of selection. The parental line AC (SP.l) was collected from Gnanamedu village of Cuddalore district. This variety has the ability of free flowering and seed set throughout Tamil Nadu. It was found to possess high bulb yield 18.91 t/ha as well as seed setting ability (250-300kglha). This variety was compared with COA onion for bulb yield. It recorded 18.78% increase in yield over COA. The propagation of onion through seeds saves the huge cost incurred in bulb planting. The bulbs of CO On 5 are attractive pink in colour. Each clump has 3 to 5 bulbs and weighs about 60g. Seed to bulb takes about 90 days and bulb to seed takes 95 to 100 days with a seed yield of3.5g per plant. The bulbs have a TSS of 13.17° brix and an ascorbic acid content of 8.07 mg/100 g. The pungency principle measured in pyruvic acid is 2.37 micro moles per gram of fresh weight. It is moderately susceptible to purple blotch and susceptible to thrips. This variety is adaptable to fertile loamy soils under irrigated condition and found best suitable for January planting that gives economic yield and better development of bulbs.
