Summary
When the respiration of fruits and the permeation of plastic films are balance, the concentrations of oxygen and carbon dioxide can be spontaneously modified in MAP (modified atmosphere packaging) bags. Linear relationships between the concentration of O2 or CO2 and plastic film thickness and area as well as cherry tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum var. cerasiforme) weight were established. According to the relationships, the MAP bag was designed. Approximately 98% of cherry tomatoes stored in the MAP bags at 0 degrees C for over 60 days were good, while the fruits stored only at low temperature shrank after 7 days.
