Summary
An experiment was conducted to induce variability in different polygenic traits of a blackgram cv. CO 5 using gamma ray and ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS). In the M2 generation, the mean values for plant height, number of primary branches per plant, number of clusters per plant, number of pods per plant, pod length and seed yield per plant were shifted to both positive and negative directions in the gamma ray treatments. In the case of EMS concentrations, all the above characters recorded negative shift in mean except for number of clusters per plant which recorded positive shift in mean at 60 mM concentration. For the most important yield characters, pods per plant and seed yield per plant, phenotypic coefficient of variation, genotypic coefficient of variation and genetic advance as percentage of mean were maximum at 20 kR gamma ray treatment and 40 mM EMS treatment.
