Summary
A study was conducted to determine the effect of treatment period (3, 5, and 7 h) on the growth of mung bean (cultivars Keumseongnogdu, Owoolnogdu, and Zhong Lu 1) sprouts and to analyse its absorption amount based on their moisture content. Seeds of the 3 cultivars were soaked in 50 ppm BA solution immediately before the 3-h aeration and then cultured for 6 days. The sprouts were sorted by 4 categories based on hypocotyl length, >7 cm, 4 to 7 cm, <4 cm, non-germination, and their morphological characters, fresh and dry weights. Zhong Lu 1 had the highest rate in longer than 7-cm hypocotyls of the three cultivars but the lowest one in shorter than 4 cm. Rates of the above 4 categories in Keumseongnogdu and Owoolnogdu showed no significant difference between the treatment periods, but one of longer than 7-cm hypocotyls in Zhong Lu 1 decreased with longer treatment period. Lateral roots were less formed with longer treatment periods, especially lengthened by 3 to 5 h. Hypocotyl and root were also lengthened with longer treatment period and hypocotyl was more thickened in 5-h treatment period than in the two others. Total fresh and dry weights per sprout showed no significant difference between treatment periods although Zhong Lu 1 relatively grew faster than the other cultivars. In the shorter than 5-h treatment periods, the absorption amount of BA was the highest in Zhong Lu 1. However, in the 7-h treatment period, it was the greatest in Keumseongnogdu and Zhong Lu 1.
