Summary
Horticultural production and consumption has great unexploited potential to alleviate poverty and malnutrition. Fruits and vegetables make up only 17% of the diet in sub-Saharan Africa compared to 25%, 27% and 44% in India, Japan and China, respectively. The resulting micronutrient malnutrition contributes to 2.7 million deaths each year. Malnutrition is also directly related to the global epidemic of obesity. Consumption of horticultural produce can help to solve these problems, but is constrained by under investment in research and variety, production, phytosanitary, post harvest, and marketing issues. The World Vegetable Center (A VRDC) and the Global Horticulture Initiative are leading efforts to address these issues in the developing world.
