Summary
In late August 2002, patches of soyabean (Glycine max) plants in a field in Richland County, North Dakota, USA, exhibited symptoms of charcoal rot and died prematurely. Dead plants had a silvery-grey appearance, and black microsclerotia (76?8? in diameter) were present in the vascular tissues of the lower stems and roots. The fungus was identified as Macrophomina phaseolina based on colony colour and morphology and size of the microsclerotia. Pathogenicity tests were conducted and M. phaseolina was reisolated from tissues of inoculated plants. This is thought to be the first report of the disease in North Dakota.
