Summary
Soyabean plants exhibiting symptoms of charcoal rot were observed near Zumbrota, Minnesota, USA in August 1999. Symptoms included shrunken, unfilled pods, and brown, wilted leaves attached to dead petioles and stems. When stems of symptomatic plants were split, areas of grey-black discoloration were present in the stem cortex. Stem tissue placed on potato dextrose agar yielded fungal colonies identified as M. phaseolina. The morphology of the fungus is described. In 2000, M. phaseolina was isolated from plant samples from 11 of 90 fields sampled in a statewide soyabean disease survey. This is the first report of charcoal rot disease due to M. phaseolina on soyabeans in Minnesota.
