Summary
The effects of plant age, leaf position and time of day on nitrate content and activities of nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase [glutamate-ammonia ligase] were investigated in lettuce and Oenanthe stolonifera [O. javanica]. Nitrate contents in both crops were highest at 06.00 h, then decreased until 16.00 h. Activities of nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase were lowest at 04.00 h and were highest at 12.00 h. Nitrate contents were highest 30 days after planting, while nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase activities showed peaks in activities 20 days after planting. Nitrate content was the highest in the first leaf to emerge, and decreased as leaf age decreased, before increasing once more in the youngest leaves. The activities of nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase showed the opposite trend.
