Summary
During the dry season of 1996, surveys were made for incidence of root and stem rot in 99 cassava fields in Benin and Nigeria. Diseased plants occurred in 65 fields in Benin and in 15 fields in Nigeria, and incidence ranged from 0 to 54%. N. mangiferae was the predominant fungus isolated from diseased plants, and its pathogenicity was confirmed. This is thought to be the first report of N. mangiferae causing root and stem rot of cassava in West Africa.
