Summary
The lemon basil (Ocimum basilicum) cultivar Sweet Dani was produced via 4 generations of selection from a plant among the progeny of PI358465 (originally from Yugoslavia) that had naturally outcrossed with 51 USDA basil accessions of diverse origins. In field trials in Indiana in 1992-94, Sweet Dani was taller and more robust with a higher concentration of citral in the essential oil than the cultivars Source, Johnny's and Mrs. Burns. Sweet Dani is an attractive ornamental that can be grown successfully as a culinary herb, used fresh in floral arrangements or dried for use in potpourris. The leaves and flowers can be used alone or in mixtures with other herbs to prepare herbal teas or as a flavouring for many kinds of foods and beverages.
