A study of water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk) under different cultivation conditions

In order to evaluate the suitability of I. aquatica (a food, feed and medicinal plant) for cultivation in Cuba, cv. White Stem plants were grown at La Habana, Cuba, in a red ferrallitic soil or in water tanks containing zeolite and organic matter. In one of the soil trials, vegetative propagation was compared with propagation from seeds. Data are presented on plant growth parameters, nutrient contents (N, P, K, Ca, Fe and beta-carotene) and organoleptic qualities. From the results it was concluded that this crop is well adapted to cultivation conditions in Cuba. The plants grown in tanks yielded 9 kg of leaves and new stems per m2. Owing to their high germination capacity, seeds were the preferred method of propagation.
