Summary
Bacterial leaf spot disease of malabar spinach (Basella rubra [B. alba]) was discovered in Jiangsu Province, China in 1994. Ten isolates were identified by means of classical methods, numerical analysis, cellular composition analysis and DNA G+C mol %. Thepathogen is a Gram-positive, irregular short rod. Lateral or subpolar flagella were observed in all isolates. The DNA base composition is 69.952 mol % G+C. The characteristics of the pathogen are consistent with those of Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens. According to the serological reaction as well as the pathogenicity of the isolates to other plant hosts of the genus, the pathogen is considered to be a new pathovar of the species. The name suggested is Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv.basellae pv. nov.
