Abstract

During routine seed testing in India, green gram (Vigna radiata) samples heavily infected with Macrophomina phaseolina were encountered. The seed coat, cotyledon, radicle and plumule were examined for the presence of this fungus. Transmission from the seed to seedlings was evaluated in the green gram varieties, HM-85-111, AVM-3, PDM-11 and Pusa 105. M. phaseolina was mainly foun in the seed coat. M. phaseolina caused 7-15% seed rot and 51-67% seedling mortality.
