Summary
Detailed studies on crossability including pollen germination, pollen-tube growth, cytology and embryo and endosperm development were carried out on Vigna radiata, V. umbellata and their crosses. The interspecific cross succeeded only when V. radiata was used as female parent. There was no penetration of pollen tube in the stigma of V. umbellata, when the pollen was taken from V. radiata. Hybrid inviability appeared in the cross V. radiata var. BSG x V. umbellata cross. Cytological studies on the parents and their hybrid suggested only minor structmal alterations at the chromosomal level indicating that these species belong to the same genomic group. [AS]
