Summary
The occurrence and nature of in vitro shoot vitrification (hyperhydricity) in shallot (Allium cepa var. gr. aggregatum) were described and examined. Cytological, histochemical and scanning and transmission electron microscopic analyses were done. The study revealed histochemical imbalance emphasizing protein and lignin deficiencies, mitotic inhibition, cell wall dissociation, cell hypertrophy and elongation and indefinite organization of shoot tissues in concomitance with vitrification.
