Summary
Two soybean lines developed by the Institute of Plant Breeding, UPLB, IPB SY85-03-11 and IPB SY85-16-08, will be recommended as soybean varieties UPL SY- and UPL SY-10, respectively. Based on the National Cooperative Testing data for crop year 1993-1995, their seed yield ranged from 2.1 to 2.5 t/ha. Similar yields were also obtained in trials conducted by the Nestle Agricultural Research and Training Center in Tupi, South Cotabato and in Tagum, Davao Province [Philippines]. UPL SY-8 is higher yielding during the dry season crop. It is also high yielding in the post-rice crop in Luzon. The seed storability o both varieties are better than the existing varieties. Their seed weight ranged from 12 to 13 grams/100 seeds and their maturity ranged from 84 to 96 days. As evaluated by the Institute of Food Science and Technology, UPLB and the Bureau of Plant Industry, the flavor, aroma, and acceptability of their soymilk is similar to 'Manchuria' and 'UPL SY-6'. Both UPL SY-8 and UPL SY-10 are recommended for planting in the production areas of Southern Mindanao. UPL SY-8 is also recommended for irrigated dry season planting in Luzon.
