This study examines the cost, economics and problems of rabi onion storage in Pune district, Maharashtra, India. It is revealed that the per quintal storage cost of rabi onions is Rs. 98.16. The share of fixed and variable costs in the total storage cost is 5.12 and 94.88 per cent, respectively. Onion producers get more remunerative profit for stored onions than for non-stored ones. Producers with storage get five times more profit (Rs. 52.37) as compared to those with no storage (Rs. 10.96). The producers' share in the consumers' rupee is higher for stored onions (65.11%) than for non-stored onions (63.14%). Major problems expressed by growers include lack of scientific storage facility, high losses in monetary value, high cost of storage structure and inadequate availability of seeds of cultivars with good keeping quality.
