Summary
Due to scarcity and high cost of seeds, farmers with advanced educational training propagate cabbage (cv. NS Cross) by placing seeds in vitro. The most vigorous plantlets are selected and placed in beds as mother plants. Cuttings are taken, rooted and transplanted to the field. Yields from cuttings generally are about 25% higher than those from seed-produced transplants primarily due to decreased transplant shock and better plant vigor. From the superior plants, farmers keep dormant axillary buds or allow shoots to develop after the cabbage is harvested. The dormant seeds are placed in vitro for subsequent re-multiplication. The considerable genetic variation in the seed of cv. NS cross warrants this judicious selection process.
