Summary
A review is presented of eradicative treatments for the elimination of deeply-seated bacteria and fungi from vegetable seeds. Physical and chemical methods are examined including, dry heat, hot water, aerated steam, aqueous seed soaks in antibiotics and in fungicides, also the use of systemic fungicides and their introduction into seeds in organic solvents. The value of such treatments is interpreted in relation to their effectiveness in reducing the incidence of seed-borne infection below a minimum tolerance level thereby preventing serious disease outbreaks in field crops.
