Abstract

Solanum melongena (Brinjal egg-plant or aubergine) and its wild relative S incanum sensu lato, from Asia and Africa, were investigated by crossability, morphology, seed coat SEM, seed protein electrophoresis and leaf isozyme analysis of 70 accessions. Information obtained supports the hypothesis that S. incanum sensu lato groups A and B (S. camphlacanthum etc. and S. panduriforme) evolved in equatorial and tropical eastern Africa, and group C and D (S. incanum sens str. and S. lichtensteinii etc.) developed in southern and north-eastern Africa and the Middle East: further migration into Asia, possibly through unintentional as well as intentional human intervention, resulted in groups E, F, G and H of S. melongena (wild, weedy, primitive and advanced cultivars).
