Summary
Higher yields, better bulb quality in locally adapted cultivars, a reliable seed supply and savings in foreign currency are the primary aims of the project. The Republic's annual seed requirement is for 53.6t of onion seed. Two locally selected red cultivars are being developed to supply this demand: about Bafteem in the south and about Hemiyar, derived from about Pusa Red, in the north. Training, seed industry infrastructure development, an increased awareness of the value of high quality seed and the elimination of low quality imports are planned. Quality control and programme management is being undertaken by the National Centre for Seed Multiplication. The four-year programme planned for two sites is described. [AS]
