Summary
The objective of this research is to determine if the use of a portable plastic trap "torito" reduces populations of whitefly and leaf roll in tomato and is economically attractive. The experiment was done on the Omoita Farm, Monte Grande, in Sanarate, El Progreso; from May to September 2000, and 6 treatments were included: (1) one pass of the torito each day, 2) one pass of the torito every two days, 3) one pass of the torito every three days, 4) one pass of the torito every four days + application of pesticides every eight days, 5) one standard (farmers) check, (chemical treatment) and 6) control plot, with no foliar pesticide applications but with imidacloprid applied to the speedlings before transplant. The experimental design was randomizedcomplete block, with four blocks. Results indicate that all treatments reduced whitefly and virus populations compared to the control. Statistical analysis showed that the highest yielding treatments were the farmer check (chemical control) with a yield of 45410 Kg/ha, treatment 4 with 40760 Kg/ha and treatment 2, with 39080 Kg/ha. With inclusion of the economic analysis, treatment 2 exhibited the major net benefit and a marginal rate of return equal to 2255%. It was concluded that the torito has the effect of controlling whitefly and leaf roll (viruses) in tomatoes, therefore, use of the torito is highly recommended as part of an IPM program for the management of the whitefly-virus complex in tomatoes.
