Amaranth (Amaranthus tricolor L.), mugwort (Artemisia princeps Pamp.), eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) and perilla (Perilla frutescens Britton) were grown in a greenhouse using sand culture with a nutrient solution containing 0, 20, 40, 60 meq/l of NaCl or Na2SO4. Results are summarized as follows: In the range of concentrations used, amaranth and mugwort were relatively tolerant to salt, eggplant moderately tolerant, and perilla sensitive. In amaranth, mugwort, eggplant and perilla, the absorption of K, Ca and Mg decreased, as the concentration of NaCl and Na2SO4 in the nutrient solutions increased. The ratio of the decrease in K absorption to the increase in Na absorption was a good indicator of salt tolerance among the 4 plants used. [AS]
