Summary
The effects of N rates (0, 75, 150, 225 and 300 kg/ha), soil fertility (low or medium), harvesting date (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 days) and natural lighting on the biomass, nitrate accumulation and nutritive quality of Chinese cabbage were determined in a field experiment conducted in China. Crop yield increased with increasing rates of N up to 225 kg/ha, whereas nitrate content increased with increasing rates of N regardless of soil fertility levels. The rate of nitrate accumulation in the crop was higher when grown in soils with medium fertility compared to those grown under low fertility. The nitrate content of the crop decreased upon exposure to two days of continuous sunlight. Nitrogen application reduced the vitamin C content of the crop under both soil fertility levels, and the soluble sugar and amino acid content of the crop under low fertility. Vitamin C, soluble sugar and amino acid content increased with the delay in harvesting.
