Summary
Mungbean is one of the most popular leguminous upland crops grown by farmers at the IRRI-BPI cropping system test site in Manaoag, Pangasinan. An experiment was conducted to determine the yields, costs, and returns at various levels for mungbean and rice-mungbean cropping patterns; and to compare the yields, costs, and returns for rice-mungbean cropping pattern applied on farmer-managed field and in experimental trials. The results of mungbean at various tillage levels show the much lower yield obtained in the high tillage plots plus a high labor cost incurred in land preparation accounts for its low return. Both rice and mungbean on experiment plots outyielded of that on farmer`s plots, hence, gross returns are also higher on experimental plots. However, cost of labor and material of experimental plots were much higher than that of farmer`s plots. Return to cash for rice-mungbean pattern under farmer`s plots was greater than that of in experimental plots. [AS]
