Summary
Daikon (Japanese radish), common cabbage and Chinese cabbage are the major cruciferous crops grown in Japan. To maintain high yield and quality in an intensive cultivation system, insecticides are indispensable, since these crops are exposed to a wide variety of insect pests. Larvae of Mamestra brassicae, Spodoptera litura, Plutella xylostella, Pieris rapae ssp crucivora and Oebia undalis and adult Phyllotreta striolata and aphids - all of which attack aerial plant parts - are controlled by foliar application of acephate cartap, phenthoate, dichlorvos and others. Soil incorporation of acephate granules and top dressing with acephate and disulfoton granules are also effective. Agrotis fucosa and A. ypsilon, which cut the seedlings, are controlled by soil treatment with cyanophenphos dust and diazinon granules and baits of carbaryl and trichlorfon. Soil treatment with dichlorfenthion and disulfoton protects against injury caused by P. xylostella larvae. Chlorfenvinphos or diazinon soil treatment controls Hylemia platura. To ensure safety, pesticide registration requires detailed statements about the toxicity and environmental impact of pesticides. Besides, insecticide application is restricted to a permitted period and has to comply with the government`s `Directions for the Safe Use of Agricultureal Chemicals` to keep residues below tolerance. These measures are essential for insecticide use on vegetables which are frequently eaten uncooked. [AS]
