Summary
Reciprocal interspecific hybrids of Brassica oleracea L. and B. campestris L. were easily obtained by embryo culture. Amphidiploids of these hybrids produced heading forms of B. napus. After selection for several generations, a new type of heading vegetable was released and called `hakuran`. Morphological characteristics of hakuran are intermediate between common cabbage and Chinese cabbage. Like common cabbage, hakuran leaves are tasty and good for salads and pickles. Bacterial softrot resistance was introduced from common cabbage and low temperature sensitivity from Chinese cabbage. However, more work is necessary before expanding this new crop for commercial production. Seed production, head size and shape, uniformity, eating quality, and disease resistance need to be improved. Hakuran is self-incompatible, but cross-compatible with other members of genus Brassica. It is a promisng bridge plant in our breeding program, particularly for introducing disease resistance. It could also be used as a parent, with Chinese cabbage, to create further new crops. [AS]
