Abstract

The effect of planting date, growth stage, and environmental conditions on rust development was studied from September 1979 to January 1980. Later planting dates showed earlier infection and slower rust development. During January, February and June 1980, the rust development was slowest. Under the same conditions, the older plants had been seriously infected, while the rust developed slowly on the young ones, indicating that the growth stage affected rust development. Thus, in screening for rust resistance, the same growth stage, and environmental conditions should be considered. [PLH]
