Summary
The wide range of field emergence (17-90%) found among 18 lots of soybean seed from the USA with laboratory germinations above 80%, indicated the existence of differences in seed vigour in commercially available seed. The electrical conductivity of seed soak water of the lots was highly predictive of field emergence and superior to laboratory germination. Low vigour seed lots imbibed water rapidly through split seed coats causing damage to the cells of the cotyledons which resulted in high levels of leakage of electrolytes. Damage caused by rapid imbibition through split seed coats is discussed as a factor contributing to low vigour and as an important consideration in the development of a routine conductivity test for soybean seed.
