Summary
Inoculation of the cut surfaces of susceptible sweetpotato root tissue with certain nonpathogenic isolates of Ceratocystis fimbriata induced a resistance or immunity to subsequent challenge by pathogenic isolates. This induced immunity was limited to a thin layer adjacent to the surface inoculated with the nonpathogen. The acquired immunity was not specific for C. fimbriata and protected against some but not all pathogens tested. Only nonpathogenic isolates of C. fimbriata induced the immunity; other fungi did not. Immunity was induced in all susceptible sweetpotato varieties tested. [AS]
