Summary
Rust is considered as one of the most devastating diseases of soybean in Northern India. Over 3300 lines were screened for rust resistance in the field. The lines were classified into the following three groups: resistant: P.I. 200465, P.I. 200466, P.I. 200477, P.I. 200490, P.I. 200492, and P.I. 224268; moderately resistant: E.C. 11695, E.C. 50081, P.I. 88816-S, P.I. 181567, P.I. 200455, P.I. 200474, P.I. 200476, P.I. 2004270, P.I. 200487, P.I. 285089, P.I. 341352, E.C. 22694, E.C. 36956, Ankur, and PK-71-39; susceptible: all remaining lines, except for the very early ones which escaped infection. A number of high-yielding, rust-resistant breeding lines (PK-73-84, PK-73-94, PK-73-109, PK-73-148, PK-73-156) were developed from crosses of some of the identified resistant lines with high-yielding, but susceptible varieties.
