Abstract

Effects of rice straw, transparent polyethylene (PE) and black polyethylene mulches on growth and yield of Chinese cabbage in spring were investigated. Plants directly sown on April 10, the optimum seeding time for the spring crop, grew most rapidly and showed significantly higher plant weight in the transparent PE mulch plot than other treatments. Increase of plant weight mainly resulted from increasing the number of leaves and leaf width. The yield of the transparent PE plot was not different from the other mulch treatments, because the rate of soft rot infection was significantly higher in that particular treatment. However it was significantly higher than the unmulched check when seeded in a warm seed bed on March 15 and transplanted in the open field on April 16. [AS]
