Summary
Agriculture played a very important role in Taiwan's economic development during the 1960's. Foreign currency earned from exported agricultural products contributed to government finances and. industrialization. Particularly, processed of mushrooms, . asparagus, and seed products of vegetables were the main export items. Actually, both asparagus and mushroom were new crops for growers in Taiwan in the late 1950's. Asparagus and mushroom were successfully developed as a result of governmental supervision of crops research and industrial development. The income from these products not only improved the rural economy, but also triggered the fast development of Taiwan's economy.In this essay, the history of the development and improvement of vegetables in Taiwan is described, the situation of the vegetable industry and future goals are also included. From the as'pect of international trade liberalization and economic. development in Taiwan, most vegetable production in the country is for domestic consumption. Therefore the growth of Taiwan's vegetable industry will be toward high-quality products and indigenous vegetable crops. Mechanized management will be carried out to lower the cost of labor and to compete with products from overseas.
