Abstract
It is difficult to control viral disease in plants by chemicals directly. Knowing that most viruses are transmitted by insects, farmers routinely apply insecticides weekly or more frequently. This practice is not only costly but also harmful to farmers and consumers. Therefore, to find or to develop virus resistant lines become an important research in virology field. In Taiwan, the most important viruses are cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), chilli veinal mottle virus (CVMV), potato virus Y (PVY) and tobamoviruses, tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) and pepper mild mottle virus (PMMV). Resistance to CMV has not been found so far, however, several lines was found to be tolerant to CMV. additional sources of resistance to CVMV and PVY were found in PBC and VC lines. They were also identified with PMMV resistance. However, it is still important to find new lines for resistance, especially for CMV. P and I lines are the new lines for testing. The results showed the most P and I lines were resistant to PVY and CVMV. 17PeMV-Tex#1 and 17PeMV-Nic may be resistant to CMV. None of the P and I lines screened showed resistance to PMMV. [AS]
