Summary
In order to determine the optimal control of the diamondback moth on winter cauliflower in Taiwan we conducted the following experiments. These are artificial defoliation, observation of the growth stages of cauliflower plant and field assessments of some density treatment levels. Results showed that protection within 3 weeks after transplanting was necessary to enable seedling establishment. And control was needed during 31 to 45 days after transplanting to keep the pest density below 1 larva/plant. The control threshold thereafter could be increased to 10 larvae/plant. Cost/benefit analysis indicated that 6 to 7 sparys of Bacillus thuringiensis could give the maximum profit when the price of cauliflower was no less than 7 NT dollars/kg. [AS]
