Summary
Uninoculated soybean leaves from plants less than 31 days old released antifungal substances when leached for 24 hours under benzene. Similar substances were produced when macerates of leaves in water were incubated. Experiments indicated that the unknown substances, which were not the isomers of glyceollin known as soybean phytoalexins, were released by the action of an enzyme on precursors. These findings provide a caution about detection of antifungal compounds created as an art-fact of an extraction procedure, which can, under different conditions, yield compounds such as the glyceollins.
